The atmosphere at Skinner Park in San Fernando was electric yesterday as thousands gathered for Calypso Fiesta 2025. Among the 40 talented calypsonians vying for a spot in the finals, Akhenaton "Yung Bredda" Lewis emerged as a standout performer, captivating the audience with his powerful rendition of "We Rise."

As the ninth performer of the day, Yung Bredda's presence ignited the crowd. Fans waved banners emblazoned with "Big Yard" and "Big Tune," dancing and singing along throughout his performance. His song, an anthem reflecting personal triumph and a call for national unity, resonated deeply with attendees. The overwhelming response suggested that if encores were customary, the crowd would have eagerly demanded one.

Expressing gratitude for the enthusiastic reception, Yung Bredda shared that, despite feeling on top of the world, he remains grounded—a value instilled by his mother. Notably absent from the event, she was celebrating his daughter's birthday, underscoring the family's close bond. Reflecting on his journey, Yung Bredda emphasized, "Calypso is my foundation, and I'm big on foundation."

The event commenced later than scheduled, leading to some initial frustration among patrons. However, once the competition began, performances like Yung Bredda's quickly revitalized the crowd's spirits. The lineup featured a blend of seasoned veterans and fresh faces, all delivering commendable performances. Standouts included Jalani "Lani K" Kojo's moving piece "Death Row, Lord I Repent" and reigning monarch Ta'Zyah O'Connor's "Kaiso to D World," both of which received positive audience reactions.

The anticipation now builds for the finals at Dimanche Gras on March 2, where the top performers from Calypso Fiesta will compete for the coveted Calypso Monarch title. With his dynamic performance and the crowd's unwavering support, Yung Bredda has solidified his status as a formidable contender in this year's competition.
