Port of Spain – April 18, 2025

Prime Minister Stuart Young engaged in a significant dialogue with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reinforce the strong bilateral relations and energy collaboration between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. This conversation follows the recent revocation of two key OFAC licenses that had permitted T&T to engage in energy trade with Venezuela.

Despite this development, Secretary Rubio emphasized that the revocation is not indicative of any change in the U.S.–T&T relationship. He acknowledged the strategic importance of Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector and commended PM Young’s leadership. Both leaders agreed to pursue alternative solutions that protect T&T’s energy interests while adhering to U.S. sanctions.

This discussion underscores a continued commitment to mutual goals: regional energy security, economic stability, and strategic diplomacy in the Caribbean.
