Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has officially announced his retirement from active politics, effective March 16, 2025. He made this announcement today while speaking at the inauguration of the Lisa Morris-Julian Boulevard today.
This marks the end of his notable 45-year career, during which he has been the Member of Parliament for Diego Martin West since 1991 and has held the position of Prime Minister since 2015.
Dr. Rowley, who turned 75 last October, had previously indicated his intention to step down before the end of his term and not seek re-election in the upcoming general elections. His retirement paves the way for Energy Minister Stuart Young to assume leadership of the People's National Movement (PNM) and the office of Prime Minister. Young's anticipated succession marks a historic moment, as he is set to become Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister of Chinese descent.

In his farewell address at the recent CARICOM summit, Dr. Rowley reflected on his tenure and urged regional leaders to maintain unity. He expressed pride in the progress made during his leadership and emphasized the importance of collaboration among Caribbean nations.
As he transitions into retirement, Dr. Rowley has shared plans to dedicate more time to family, farming, and golf. His departure marks the end of an era in Trinidad and Tobago's political landscape, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment to the nation.
